Newish to guineas

I think it might be coons I have their foot prints all over my car windsheild. Or owls, hawks, coys, fox' lol! I live near the taconic mountains in NY so we have a lot of predators. I'm building a bigger coop and run this weekend and I'm thinking about doing an open part to the runso they can get in and out on their own but I could lock them in as well. They are amazing birds and I never thought I would love them as much as I do. Next spring I'm getting 30 and a hand full of chickens and try to raise them together and hope that with the chickens wanting to stay close it will hopefully keep my guineas closer as well. I really want a few vulturine and see if I can get a few crosses between them and a royal purple

Also to chickbird. These are pet safe the actual name. They can't be stepped in by your poultry or dogs.
They are just for coons and it only takes a marshmellow for bait. I'm having trouble uploading the photos though.

aghh I still can't get a pic uploaded. But I did get 1 this morn in this specific trap. They ate 30 in a day last year. No mercy.

Guineagirl & chickbird I did manage to get those photos on my profile if you want to look at that trap.

I have a few questions....I am getting some Guinea eggs in late spring and need some edvice on how to train them. Can I put them in the coop after they hatch or should I put them in a brooder box? I am also looking at getting black copper maran eggs from a guy here on BYC. What are things I should worry about with mixing Guineas and chickens? I'm getting pearl gray and lavender Guineas are they good togather? How many eggs should I get? I'm getting a dozen black copper maran eggs, how many Guinea eggs should I get to make a good mix? I'm planning on coop training them what age should I start that? Can I hold them when they are keets?

They will train themselves to go in the coop if you lock them up for awhile. I'd start with a brooder box. Then you can put them in the coop at a few wks old. If it's cold they will need a light. In the spring shouldn't need it. Guineas are slightly aggressive towards chickens. Not a problem if they are the same size when you put them in the coop and after 2-4 wks (not 2-4 wks old 2-4 wks after putting them in the coop) you can open the door let them free range that and a large coop will help with the guineas aggressiveness.

If you are getting shipped eggs you should get at least 3 to 4 times as many eggs as you want to actually hatch. I have gotten as high as 45% hatch and as low as zero hatch on shipped eggs. If you end up with too many that actually hatch, you can always sell the extras.

Good luck.

Just ended up with 11 new 2 day old keets O.O looks like I am in for a noisey messy winter! @clsranch I trapped 3 coons and then had to drive them up to my neighbors house to have them "taken care of" I couldn't do it. I can gut a adamn deer in the woods and happily eat it but I couldn't shoot the coons. Something about shooting an animal in a trap didn't sit right with me :\

I'm usually "that neighbor". I don't mind taking care of things that eat my livestock. I keep buying chickens and buying and buying. They almost make it to laying age usually. Hopefully your keets are a little safer after the 3 got moved.

I have 24 standard size poultry chickens and guinea and 6 bantam. I bought eggs at the store yesterday. None of mine are old enough yet to lay. The only things that survived the coon raid earlier this year from my big coop is a RIR roo and 1 male guinea. I left the door open. My fault but I have to when I leave for jobs (over a month). And not going to ask some1 to come twice a day to open and close the door. Not enough room in the coop and not rebuilding for a rent place that the land lord will be moving back into sooner or later.
