Heya, our first wee chick hatched about 30 minutes ago. Very exciting! She/he seems to be really strong, and is cheeping loudly! There is something attached to its bottom, looks like poo but it has some red stringy stuff there too. It's still partly attached to a little bit of egg shell. The rest of the shell has broken away completely. Is it ok just to leave it, will it fix itself?

Congratulations :celebrate

The chick will be fine you don't need to do anything with it. It's just its umbilical cord and will dry up and come of naturally. Don't try to remove it as this can cause the abdomen to come through the navel. Just let nature take its course.
Hope you have more hatch soon :jumpy

Thank you! It's such a noisy wee thing! I hope the others hatch soon, day 23 today so I'm a little anxious just waiting for some signs of life from them.

We've named the chick Tahi (the Maori word for 1)
