I've been hatching and raising chickens for several years but I've never encountered this problem. I have one Delaware chick that hatched today with what looked like a hernia on it's bottom. A few hours later, the chick had a sac that had come out of that "hernia" spot. Now the sac has deflated but is still out and it surely looks like something that should be on the inside. It is dragging it around the incubator and smearing blood on the other eggs that haven't hatched yet. I've experienced a hen with prolapse only once and this seems similar to that. Does anyone know what this is and what I can do about it? Thanks in advance for your help.

I answered this same question earlier. I was hopeing they would answer you, This is the yolk sac. It is usually absorbed by the time they break loose from the shell. Every once in a while they hatch before they absorb it all. By tomorrow, it should be all absorbed & everything should be fine.

A picture would help. I also had a Delaware chick hatch with what I thought was it's yolk sack hanging out. I left it in the incubator for 24hours, and it never did improve. After taking a much better look at it after the 24hours I noticed other problems. It had protruding eyes, wry neck etc.

The protrusion in the extreme lower part of it's abdomen, almost at it's vent turned out to be it's intestines. After the thorough exam we culled it. It was the only kind thing we could do. I would give it the 24hrs to be sure it's not the sack, but then give it a really good exam and make sure it doesn't have other problems.

Good luck, I'm pulling for you!

I would get them off the wire bator/hatcher floor asap if they're on one, I didn't know what this was but I have had quite a few with the condition. the first couple ripped it open on the wire and bled to death so I started "cutting their suffering short" (so I thought) if it was very bad, if it had` a little down and wasn't bleeding I tryed to keep them healthy but was very carefull handling them until it went away.

birdaholic: I suppose you were waiting for me to chime in but i wasn't online . I did have one that was this way and I went to bed with it like that thinking it would be absorbed. Well so far this hasn't happened and it is just laying there with the others starting to walk on it . I hate to open the bator because i still have others hatching and I dont want to slow them or hurt their hatch . I really dont know if I should have helped it or not but I keep reading here DO NOT open the bator during hatch so I chose not to .
