We have 2 hens in an eglu in our backyard. One hen went broody, so 21 days ago, we put a couple fertile eggs from the farmers' market under her. We found a fluffy chick sitting with Mom this morning in the nesting box. I am prepared with chick food and water, but don't know what to expect next. Does the chick just hop out of the nesting box and go to food and water?

Also, do we need to worry about the other hen, pecking the chick or worse?

Thanks in advance for any information or advice. We are really surprised the egg hatched!

Congratulations! Mom will do everything for you. As long as she can get them in and out of the nest when she wants to she will keep them at the perfect temp. and safe. You just sit back and enjoy...get the camera ready.
It may take her a couple days to move them from the nest box. No reason to hurry her. Mine came out for the first time today and they are 4 days old.

Thank you so much! That really puts my mind at ease . . .

When should we put the food and water out and where should we put it? In the coop? In the run?

It's hard to believe that the little chick will be hopping in and out of the nest and coop soon. It's so small!

Thanks again -
