So our very first hens started laying. We got them in late January from our feed store. They came from Hoovers Hatchery. We got 1 buff orpington, 1 Easter egger (incorrectly labeled Araucana but has a tail), 1 midnight majesty maran, 1 barred rock and 1 hybrid (sapphire gem). We were seeing decent sized broken eggs on the roosting tray... wasnt sure if it was broken due to falling or one of the chickens started eating eggs! So I placed a cardboard box on the roosts and behold, the sapphire gem (though I have yet to catch her in the act) went in and started laying her eggs there! She lays her eggs super early in the morning and has given us the biggest eggs so far esp in comparison to our barred rock who started laying shortly after. The first egg our barred rock laid was on the floor... then I guess she got the clue and started laying in the nesting boxes we've had. They are the only two I know are laying because they are the only two who will squat for me and the only two who sing the egg song plus I caught the barred rock in the nesting box that had her egg and the sapphire gem was always strategically placed on the roost below where the cracked egg would be... I've attached pictures of my beautiful girls and their eggs. The larger ones came from the sapphire gems and those would be here 4th and 5th egg, the other three were cracked and one had a soft shell. The small one is the 2nd one from my barred rock, her first that was laid on the ground was covered in poop so I boiled that one and gave to our dog as a treat for protecting our hens.
