I've been trying for years to convince my husband we need chickens. The day has finally come and I'm obsessing over researching day and night!

I plan on having about 6 chickens, with one being a silkie just for the fun of it. I'm definitely researching breeds that are great with children (my boys are 6 and 4), but also good layers.

I'm building my own coop out of an already existing frame I made for my boys' power wheels to sit under. I think I'm pretty much decided on everything except the flooring.

We have 4 pets, a large backyard, and are excited to get started!

G’Day from down under pkgal21 :frow Welcome and Congratulations on winning hubby over! :clap

Do I have some reading material for you! :p

First up, you might be interested in downloading this free e-book My First Year With Chickens

BYC has an active Silkie Thread

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you include your general location on your profile, this will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

BYC has a Learning Centre and also Topic of the Week articles which I have found to be a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group. Lots of relevant discussions in the topic of the week, including getting started keeping chickens, kitting out the coop and predator protection etc.

This is also an excellent article: How Much Room Do Chickens Need

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock when they arrive or other critters, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Best wishes and good luck!

Thank you! I will definitely look into all of those. I'm completely devoted to my phone lately. All my ads are now chicken related.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens!!:welcome Known as BYC. Glad you decided to join this awesome site! There are a lot very friendly and helpful members here. There are lots of information when you need it! I started out with 5 chickens and have increased it up to 14 but have loss some during the years due to possums and not having a secure enough coop. Already built a new one though and have some very happy hens!!!

For that size flock I would argue you only need fair layers, does every family member need 1 egg per day, day in and day out? Do you buy a dozen eggs every other days for your household? Please review https://livestockconservancy.org/index.php/heritage/internal/chicken-chart

and determine your actual needs as these are living breathing beings. And then totally jump in blindly. Have a preconstructed home for them as they grow faster than you can imagine.
