When I was younger I was heavily into outdoor sports, hunting, fishing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, rappelling. Anything that would test me physically, but for some reason I never had much interest in the sweaty arm pit sports. Probably due to my influence my sons never wanted to play organized sports. Every thing we did was something we could do as a family. I think we hit every cross country ski trail in Michigan and the number of hours I've spent belaying a son while he worked a particularily difficult rock face are uncountable.
To this day I have difficulty understanding how anyone can get so worked up on the outcome of a game between a bunch of overpaid atheletes. Wouldn't it be better to get off the couch and test yourself?

Since my hubby and two friends work for the Padres, I better say BASEBALL!!!!! Although, its in the blood. My Mom used to say that my first words weren't the traditional Da-da Ma-ma stuff but yelling at the top of my voice GO DODGERS!!! just like my parents. I thought that Sandy and Don were my Uncles, and had no concept of what football was like. My bat, balls and glove were always either by the door, or flying through someone's window.

I think in order to call it a sport there needs to be a set of rules and competition. Climbing up rocks or hiking through the snow doesn't really seem exciting. Don't act pretentious because our interests aren't all identical.

My post wasn't meant to be pretentious, nor a condemnation of team sports, it was merely a comment on my personal feelings. Sorry if you felt it was an affront.

I apologize. Maybe I just took it wrong. More power to you and your interests but I guess it's just a different side of sports. Yeah I'm sure it would be cool to go kayaking and skiing but it takes a little more time and a lot more money than turning on the game at half time and rooting for your people. My remark about skiing not being exciting was a little off base, I've done activities like the ones you've mentioned and had a good time.

I enjoy doing that as well as sports. Different people, different interests.
