My chickens were said to be RIRS, but the roo and pullet are both a medium brown, chestnut color.

Roo is starting to get green tinted tail, hackle and wing feathers, with lighter colored bars on the tip of each of his wing feathers. Also starting to get more mahogany colored.

My pullet is still that warm chestnut color, so far no sign of her getting darker. She also has a darker beak and comb than he does...

They came from a hay exchange/feed store so im just not 100% sure. I will take more pics tomorrow

What color were they as chicks? RIR are red as chicks, NHR are a pale reddish blonde as chicks.

My roo Was pale blonde, almost white in spots. But my pullet was more of a cinnamon red color. Now my roo is the darker one

That's kind of odd. I can see your confusion. A cinnamon red chick would have been a RIR, and a blonde chick would have been a NHR. Dunno.

Can you post photos? That might help.

I always seem to have technical difficulties trying to post pics in threads. Im not sure if its my phone or if I just don't know how. I have pics of them as Chicks in my albums if anyone has a moment to peek at them. I will learn how to post them in threads soon, promise!

My guess at this point is that they are production reds. The feed stores mostly re-sell hatchery stock. Hatcheries rarely, if ever, sell anything close to true to standard RIR. They simply don't have them.

True to breed standard RIR can only be gotten from a breeder. There's a great thread here on BYC which shows lots of these true bred Reds. They are a sight!!!

Don't read two years worth, from the beginning, just read and look at the last dozen pages or so and you'll see the dramatic difference.

thanks! i figured there was a good chance they weren't actually RIRs especially since the place they came from gave my boss Layer feed to take home with them....

I agree with Fred's Hens, they're Production Reds. Great birds for the backyard flock, if not that awesome brick red and cool body type of real RIR.

Glad you got your photos to work--made things MUCH easier!
