This is my first time raising ducks, and I have 3 Rouen and 2 Black Swedish. They will be 3 wees old tomorrow, and yesterday my favorite started showing signs of leg weakness. I had noticed him sitting alot the day before, but figured he was tired. (he has been growing so fast!) but when i took them out to forage, I could tell something was wrong by how he walked. I researched niacin deficiancy, and got pills today. (they didn't have liquid) since they waste much of their water, I ground up 1 100mg pill and put it in their gallon of water. But, should I give an extra suppliment to my Cleo, since he is already showing signs? I know it can be toxic in large doses, so I am scared to give him more.

Please help =(

I just Checked the label, and I'm shocked to see it has dicalcium phosphate, cellulose, stearic acid, magnesium stearate, whole brown rice powder! What is wrong with people!!!
I've taken the water out, will that have harmed them?

Dicalcium phosphate is a calcium supplement, so it should be ok. Cellulose is a filler, and relatively inert. Stearic acid is a binder. Most of that stuff is just filler and should be fine.

I prefer just getting brewer's yeast and adding it to their food.

I just about had a heart attack, raisind ducklings has my nerves on end. Im beyond attached.

But how soon should I start seeing improvement in Cleo? I'm hoping I caught his leg weakness early.

I've heard people have seen improvement in a matter of days, but you should definitely see something within a week.

I was helping someone on Facebook, her duckling was walking on its elbows and she started the niacin and within a week he was back up on his feet, and now a month later he's walking normally. It sounds like you caught it pretty early, so you should see results fairly quickly.

Thank you so much!

This was my first post, but this website has been a huge help in answering my questions for the past 3 weeks.

Update:

I thought Cleo would be back too 100% today but he is like at 80% leg function it seems. He (Not really sure if its a HE yet) is able to keep up with all the ducklings now. Not the fastest, and he needs a break here and there, where he will sit and just nibble at the grass around him. But, I'm just continueing on the once a day niacin.

Yay! Good to hear he's doing better.
