A warm hello from Greece!
Many thanks to all of you for helping me since last year with your already uploaded posts!
My relationship with chickens as a kid was just watching them in my grandmothers garden...Then I grew up and studied in the city with no chickens, and now I live at the edge of the city with a mini garden that could accomodate a few birds.
Last year, my 8 year old sons were asking me if by putting an egg in a box with blanket they could hatch a chicken. This question travelled me back in time 40 years ago, when I had asked my parents exactly the same and they of course replied that the egg in this way would rot.
This question of the kids lead me to this forum!
Long story short, last year we hatched in a diy incubator, fresh eggs from local mini market, resulting in a beautiful hen and a gorgeous cockerel, whom we love more than a dog! He grew huge, and due to city regulations he is now located in a coop in a field a few miles away and we visit him almost every day. The girl is in an omlet coop in our garden, with the company of a rescue hen (I found her in the street on my way to work)!
So, we hatched again this year, eggs from a coop in a nearby village, resulted in three beautiful birds, now two months old. My intention is, if I have cockerels again, to have a bachelor flock in the field, while keep any hens with the two girls in the garden.
Well, that's it! Hatching in an amazing experience, although unfortunately we had one loss for no apparent reason about 2-3 days old, in both hatches. I guess is a matter of numbers..
Nice to meet you all!
