Niece brought home a baby deer HELP!

That is so incorrect. Does will accept them with human scent on them but not if a human is nearby usually. Fawns are not programmed to wander they are hardwired to do just the opposite, they stay put and wait for mama.

If you removed the fawn for several days well that is a different story...

Most adults are aware of messing with baby wildlife not all kids are. they learn by finding out the hard way or being taught. She obviously did not know that fawns are left alone and just because mama is not with it does not mean it is abandoned.

While laws are in place to protect wildlife as well as humans, I do not think that is the issue here, Nor the issue of fines.

It is highly unlikely that the fawn is dead...if she returned it to the same location, the doe found the baby and has moved it.

That old wives' tale of "the mother will go away if it smells a human on the baby" is a load of junk.

The human scent myth is one that people have made up so that they can use it as an excuse to keep wild animals babies and pretend they are doing it for the good of the baby.

i would call wild life rescue
is it covered with fleas and other gross bugs that wild animals get
if so see about using bug medicine on it
and watch out for ticks deer ticks cause limes disease
please call wild life rescue
and tell your niece she meant good but never do that again
to leave it for the professionals

OK People it is a done deal. Let it go.

The kid made a mistake. She learned from it. The fawn lives in such a heavily human populated area I doubt Mama had any trouble with the scent. These are deer who will wander into your garage!

The fawn is most likely back with its mother.

Many people were very helpful on here about this and that help is truly appreciated. We're done.

People make mistakes, but its good to have threads like this. Gets the information out.

You did the right thing sure of it!!!!!!!

I stand corrected on the scent thing-went with what I'd "always heard". Still no guarantee the doe would have stayed around once the fawn was missing though.
I still strongly feel people have no business messing with wildlife no matter how well intentioned-won't bavk down on that.
