Niece brought home a baby deer HELP!

i do wonder about human scent on it! She might reject it but you have to hope she doesn't. Check back to make sure it's OK.

Ok, so don't freak for saying this!! Maybe you could contact a Zoo or agency and tell them the deer is orphaned. I know, it's not good to lie!!!but if it will give the fawn a chance it might be worth it.

we had a wildlife preserve that would take in wild animals and a local zoo as well. To bad your not near a sea world cause they might take it and find a place for it.

and for the neice, Dont be too mad...she didn't know better...they are so cute and anyone of us as children might have done the same.

Best of Luck

Hopefully the fawn has been returned (is neice quite sure of the initial location?) and its mom will come to the rescue. Can check hours later, very carefully and from a distance. Meanwhile, and as previously noted and as I think you've been trying to do since early on, contact wildliferehab/rescue place for advice - can be an org from anywhere at all that has deer. PM me if trouble finding one quickly.
Hope all will be well!

Sorry for not posting sooner y'all. The neice returned her to her spot and left her alone, when she went to check in the AM the fawn was gone. There is nothing around here that would eat a fawn, and there were no signs of struggle so I'm guessing Mom forgave her for fraternizing with humans and they left.

The doe would not have accepted the fawn back with human scent on it. In all liklihood the fawn wandered from the spot you left it & by now is dead. People need to learn to leave wildlife alone. That's why there are laws designed to protect animals from people who don't know what they're doing. I don't know where you are but in NY the fines for interfering with a fawn are substantial.

Sorry I did not read this earlier. I raise Whitetail deer. State licenses the whole 9 yards. Done it for about 20 years. The above quote is not correct. A fawn less than 10 days old will not wander from its spot with out the doe. They will lay still till she comes and calls them or a coyote or bear eat them. The scent will have minimal impact over maternial instincts at this stage. She will come and call the fawn and see it before she smells it and know it is hers.

That said, the best food for orphaned fawns is goat milk with whipping cream in it. VERY high fat. Babies will need about 1-2 oz every 2 hours round the clock for the first week. 99% of the battle is getting them to take the bottle. If we raise a fawn on the bottle, we find we have to take them away from the doe with in 12 hours or they will not take a bottle. They will not poop or piddle either with out help for maybe 2 weeks. You have to have a lot of paper towels or a good dog and not be squimish.

Returning it was the right thing to do. Leaving it alone would have been better but in hind sight....

Agree, sure the mother took it back, fawn dont hold scents.

Seen many does take a fawn, after some kids petted them.

Yes the fawn would be calling, mothers find their fawns all the time by their call.

The human scent, thing is over rated. Same with baby rabbit, yes the mother will return and still feed the babies.
