Hi. my name is Nigel, Nige to most people and my wife and I live in Norfolk in the east of England. We own a Post Office in a rural village and are just starting out with chickens. We have a hen house and intend our chickens to free range in the garden. We have a cat called Lolly who is going to get on fine with the chooks when we get them.

I like the look of the Buff Orpingtons or some of the Sussex breed. They look like 'proper' chickens if you know what I mean. However, what I really need to know is whether or not some chickens scratch the ground up a lot less than others. Though we want the chooks to have free range over all the garden we would rather they didn't completely destroy the grass so if some breeds were less prone to turning grass into dust they would be preferable. What I really want to hear is that Buff Orpingtons fit the bill

Within our Post Office we are moving into poultry supplies as there are a number of people in the village who keep hens, many of them rescued from battery farms. We have sold bird seed for a long time and when we were asked if we sold chicken feed we said Yes and contacted our feed supplier; It has just gone on from there to the point where we thought we might as well keep chooks of our own so we would have experience to let us help our customers more.

Thanks for the welcome ranchhand. I guessed there would be other 'Brits' here as it seems like a real friendly place. I like friendly forums

You will love this site and its wonderful members Nigel. Welcome to chicken addiction.

If you don't want lots of mess and just want chickens for pleasure rather than the size of eggs, look at Pekin Bantams...they will steal your heart. I have some along with many many rescued battery hens....but the "banties" being so small dont make as much mess or poop!

Regards - Linda

Thanks for that Linda. I know that one of the reasons we want chickens is for the occasional eggs and we would also like to rescue some chickens but, and it is a big BUT, we dont have a smallholding just a reasonably sized garden and if we keep chooks then they will have to free range in that. We dont want them confined to a run as there seems little point in rescuing them if you just put them back in a cage. However, allthough we are prepared for a bit of 'damage' to the garden we would rather it wasn't totally destroyed. Bantams might well be the ideal from a 'damage limitation' point of view

but not from an egg point of view. Hence my search, maybe fruitless for a large chicken breed that might be easier on the grass. If we do finally find a rehoming organisation that answers emails we will get what we get and the grass will have to take it's chances along with the cat

Hey Nige. Welcome!
Dont worry about kitty, but do watch out for dogs. They are the worst offenders when it comes to killing chickens. And in rural Britain I hear foxes have nearly taken over.

I have only one question for you...
