Night Birds (Owls?Nighthawks?)

What kinds of night birds are out there? I am asking because Saturday night I was at my parents house. I had been in bed for about a half hour when there were four loud thumps on the window (its upstairs) and then whatever it was, hit the light at the top of the house, the light made a popping sound and went off. I checked the next morning but there wasnt a dead bird or anything below the windows.
If it was summer, I would have said, bat.

Sounds like it was probably an owl. I've seen them fly into windows at night before. There are a few other birds out at night, but typically owls are the ones that are flying around.

Thats kind of what I was thinking but I have never seen an owl up so close to the house. I guess there is always a first time!!

Yeah, usually I just hear them but I cannot see them. I have more luck seeing them during the day! Sometimes it seems like they just lose their minds and fly into things though!

Could have been a nighthawk, although they migrate south in the winter. Strange......

This time of year, I'd guess owl, too. We have whippoorwills (sp?) in the spring and summer. One of them likes to sit in the tall tree near our bedroom window.

I guess another part to this is all day Saturday myself and youngest DS kept hearing something thumping up against the floor boards under the front porch? This is directly under where my room is and also under the yard light(on the house).
I can only imagine that something was in distress? IF its related.
Because we didnt hear anything under the porch at all yesterday.
