It was about an 1-1.5 hours after dark and the girls were all roosted. I went to the coop when I heard squawking and saw one of the girls standing on the ground. Figured maybe she got bumped off the roost or something, but then she took a step and laid a beautiful egg.

I guess when the internal clock says an egg is finished the show must go on! But what's up with the night time egg laying? It's only happened once.

LOL

Guess she was considerate to jump down to lay it, lol.

I don't know how common night laying is, but you know, what you said just made me wonder if some folks' egg eater issues in the morning (or some folks' mysterious drops in production) couldn't be due to eggs that could have been laid at night from the roost and broken then eaten.

Maybe the days when girls skip a day laying is actually because they're night laying.

Is this a young hen? New to laying?
I ask because when my littlest hen got started she would often lay from the roost.
I'd find her OOPS! eggs on the floor of the coop when I went to feed in the mornings @ 6A
Luckily the thick shavings underneath saved a lot of Roost Eggs

Now she's All Grown Up and makes it to the nest box to lay just like the other Big Girls.

Yes, she's a new layer for sure...she just started this spring.

Aww, and that so cute...and the "oops! egg", too, lol. I told her even the best of us can have accidents as I sat her back on the roost, but I was secretly thinking wow, I hope this doesn't happen too often, lol.
