I keep a light on in my coop at night. It's a 60watt buld - not too bright for an old coop. It hangs about 4 1/2 - 5 feet off the ground. I think my hens don't mind, but i have two 15 week old roo's...think they're okay with it? Maybe i'm just overly concerned. I like the idea of my chickens having some light at night.
Thanks!

I have my chickens in a very secure coop and I do not use a night light.
They need periods of darkness in their life. Non-stop light can be stressful. If I gave them light they wouldn't sleep, but be up running around and eating non-stop.
I don't even use a regular flashlight to go into the coop at night. I use a penlight. Used a flashlight once and everybody was off the roosts and ready to begin a new day in seconds.

I have a low watt red night light on in the coop for my birds. My big girls are two years old. My younger ones are a year old. My babies are 2½ weeks old. It might not make any difference to them but it does to me. One night my big girl’s night light burnt out and when I went out in the pre-dawn to check on them they were all on the floor of the coop, so I promptly replaced the bulb. I went out the next early morning and they were all in their places on their roosts. I don't know if the light had anything to do with it or not but it made me feel better. My hens always go into the coop before dark. I use an 11 watt red sign light bulb for their night light. I figured out by my electric bill that it costs me about $3.00 a month to run 24/7...

So someone else uses a night light... Someone told me that they won't sleep with a light...I had to ignore that because I've seen my hens sleep with it on before. I just wasn't sure if the light would affect my new roo's. The light shines on the floor, not in the rafters. And that's where my hens roost - in the rafters. Good to know.

My spoiled girls won't go into the coop if it is dark. My night light is on a timer and will go off a few hours after it gets dark.
