I have two pens and only one coop. I have been putting the groups together at night loose in the coop. There are two cockerels in one group and 1 in the other (along with 14 pullets total). I don't let the "young" group into the coop until the big guys are settled on their roosts and by then it is too dark for them to fight.
I get up early to let them out right at dusk as they are waking up.
Last night was the first night that I let the young ones in a little early as the boys from each group were antagonizing each other on one of the roosts.
I can imagine it would be a bad idea if I did not get out there before they all "woke up" completely....but if not, would this work long term? am I correct in assuming all they do is sleep all night long? Seems like they are usually in the same order in the morning on the roost as they were when I left them, so I just assume they sleep all night.
any thoughts?
