What do I do if one of my chickens gets loose and escapes? Lots and lots of trees surrounds my house, not to mention the creek a few yards away. I read in a book that chickens go into a stupor at nighttime and also that they try to go back to the same spot to sleep each night. Where would be a most likely place for a chicken to hide? In a tree? On a fence post? In the middle of the field? Would it be OK for me to take my dogs with me to find it?

Chickens are good at finding their way home when it gets dark and it's unlikely they'll run far enough away to get lost. Unless they get a really big fright or something chases them.
If one does sleep outside I'd suggest looking in trees. Roosting behaviour. Sleep high up.

My chickens always come to the coop at night, after foraging for the day.
