We use the vertical nipple bottles right away with new chicks, but also have a little 4 oz pyrex bowl with marbles in it as at first they do need to learn to drink.
Like @rosemarythyme said, the horizontal ones take more pressure, so they get converted 3-4 weeks old while still in the brooder.
Outside, it's all either 5-gallon DIY nipple buckets in the heated coops where they won't freeze, or we use the 3-gallon electric in the other grow-out pens where they have to sit outside.
These were too young for the horizontal one, but we put it in anyway so they can get used to it.
This was a Tupperware cereal dispenser sitting in our basement, put to use. We drilled a tiny hole in the lid so it could be kept shut yet get air for the water to run freely. This we use in the brooders so they get used to what they're going to be drinking from when moved outside.
Generally, I've done nothing as they are inquisitive and learned either one pretty quickly.
