Nipple waterer and fungus growing in it

I opened the cap to my chicken fountain today and the smell was foul. I dumped out the water and it was green. I'm guessing algae. Do any of you have this issue with the PVC waterers? How do I prevent it? Ty

Do u have bleach if so pour some in then fill with water to the top of the green don't be thrifty with the bleach and let sit the bleach will kill the algae just make sure to thoroughly rinse the tube after I have the same problem

How large is the volume of your waterer

It's 1 gallon. It's this exact one.

With the hot weather, the waterers grow slime and algae really fast. I clean them more often, and as nicktrkula said, use bleach to kill the algae. In my large waterer, I put a frozen water bottle in it to keep the water cool and that also slows down the algae growth. The hens love the cool water and it helps them stay cooler.

Two little drops in the full gallon watered is safe for the birds and will keep the slime down but i assume 1 would do
