I'm building nipple waterers for my pasture pens. I have nipples in the bottom of a bucket in the brooder, and my layer chicks have figured it out.

for the pasture pens, I have pvc pipe and 1/2" vinyl hose and barbed fittings. My problem is the connection from the bucket to the vinyl hose. Everything I have tried leaks. How did you do it?

If I use nipples or bell style waterers, i want ti fill a bucket from outside the pen.

thanks
Jason

Jason-
I suspect that you have been trying to improvise a "bulkhead fitting". Check this out-

I know it looks like you ought to be able to make one but I have never found any odd parts that will work. Guess you have found the same thing.

The price of the item above reflects the pricing level of the pet industry. We used to use a lot of them at work and bought them at a good price. I am sure there are some there. Pop me an e mail if I can help you out.

If you go to the local plumbing supply house, if you have one, or maybe even Home Depot, ask for a 1/2 inch waterheater pan connection, or fitting. That will work for the bucket. Then get some 1/2 inch PVC connectors. You can put those under the bucket and at the beginning of your nipple run. They give you the ability to disconnect and reconnect the lines. They work great. I just put one in. I think if you look under Feeding and Watering, and then I just finished my watering system, you can see the one I put in. Good luck, it makes the whole watering thing a million times easier.

Here you go I found the pictures

Thanks, that is just what I needed. I work for a HVAC/Plumbing company. I will probably try the water heater pan drain and Neal's part, and see which works best.

Did you two ever try to tap in to the curved sides of the bucket instead of the flat bottom? Did it work?

Now i need to modify my pvc pasture pen to support a 5 gallon bucket.

That's weird I work at a wholesale plumbing distributor as well. When you get the water heater pan fitting get another rubber gasket and use one on each side. Works like a champ, it doesn't drip a drop. Don't forget the connectors, they are a life saver. You'll be tossing out those water dishes in no time.

Alright you two, I work at an hvac company too, but I'm just a fabricator! Can y'all give a girl step by step instructions, please!! Thanks and Happy Easter!

I made a bucket waterer similar to in that link. The layer chicks like it. I used the nipples and directions in the Farmtek catalog. The problem is its not as applicable to the pasture pen.
