nipple waterers: do they work? Can older hens be trained to use them?

As a fishkeeper and the victim of a few failed heaters, may I recommend getting a heater that is submersible?  As far as the hobby of fishkeeping has come, all heaters can't be submersed under water.

I would recommend a heater for a small fish tank.  They are metal, don't have a tendency to overheat or fail, and are reasonably priced.

Oh yes, I did fail to specify that the fish tank heater I was speaking of is submersible. I've only see the submersible ones advertised as "unbreakable". One like this:

I also know, from personal experience, the "tetra mini" heaters they sell at Petsmart (site is down so I can't get a link) are submersible. I keep them in my betta tanks (5 gallons each).

I just unscrew the individual nipple so they leak a wee bit, just enough to drip once every few seconds. Do this for a day or two with their other waterer taken away and they figure it out real quick. Then just screw the nipples in all the way once they've got it.

What a brilliant idea!! You could market this as "training mode"
