. I thought I was the only one trying to teach them how to roost.
At 4 weeks, it took me about 3 nights to get 19 chicks to all roost. The first night I placed them all on the roost after dark, the second night half of them figured it out on their own, and I had to place the other half on the roost. The third night, there were just a couple that I had to place on the roost, and then after they they all figured it out.
With that all said, I don't think they were raised with any kind of roost to "practice" with in their brooder... my sister and her daughter raised them for me for the first month so they could enjoy the cuteness. I suspect if they had something to jump up on in the brooder, say a foot or so off the ground they they might have figured it out on their own... but maybe not?
