Owls
Lesson 1
Stigidae & Tytonidae?!

There are two basic types of owl. They are called tytonidae and strigidae.
So here are the basics for each type:
Strigidae:
Strigids(short for strigidae) are cuter than tytos(IMO). They have rounder faces, smaller heads and shorter legs than tytos. Most of them have feathered ear tufts.
Since I don't like explaining but I do like looking at owls, here are some strigids:

Eagle Owl

Great Gray Owl

Great Horned Owl

Long Eared Owl

Spotted Owl

Though Snowy Owls may look a lot like tytos, they are actually strigids.

Tytonidae:
Tytos(a shortened version of tytonidae) are sometimes called plain 'barn owls'. IMO, they are more graceful and majestic than Strigids. If anyone has read the Guardians of Ga'Hoole books, they might recognise the word 'tyto' in 'tytonidae'. Unlike strigidae, tytonidae all look a fair bit alike, except with different colourings and slightly different face-shapes.
Here are the basic differences:
Heart-shaped face
Large head and long legs
Hunt at night
No feathered ear tufts
Since I don't like explaining but I do like searching for pictures, here are some tytos:

Barn Owl

Barn Owl

This is a mutated barn owl. It is actually not a sooty, but a black barn owl.

Lesser Sooty Owl

Compare the of strigids and tytos and you'll see the difference.
