Hi all,
I've been poking around this site for a few weeks now and decided to finally join. I'm currently living in NY/NJ area and planning for adding some chickens to my family.
I just purchased a tiny little coop for the chicks when they grow out of their boxes and it should be arriving soon. I'm also planning on building a coop for the adult chickens or purchasing one from Urbannothern.com depending on how much the materials add up to be.
I was raised on a little farm with goats, chickens, cows, ducks, and other animals when I was a child before my family moved out to the city. I loved that period of my life. Now that I'm a lot older and own a house in a town that has no specific ordinances for backyard chickens, apart from roosters, we'll be introducing some to our family soon.
I'm finding it hard to locate baby chicks locally and really don't want to purchase them online. I think the first time experience of going to a hatchery or local shop that had chicks would kickoff the experience so much better.
Breeds I'm interested in are: Rhode Island Reds, Speckled Sussex, Barred Rock, Silver Laced Wyandotte, and a few others. I'm mainly interested in raising the bird both egg and meat production. I need to do a little more research but I think I'll add in a few Cornish game hens as well.
