Caroline--I'm in Charlotte, NC too, and I have bees and ducks and the neighbors have chickens--hello!! I have goats too, and that's an interesting thing... I'm wondering how long before anyone complains.

We should get together some time and compare notes. Have you considered ducks? I originally went with them because I thought they would be less likely to annoy the neighbors, but it turns out the neighbors were all planning to get chickens anyway (or, at least, three of them have in the past two years). And so far, most of the neighbors are in love with the goats, so far so good.

What part are you in? I'm in SW Charlotte, Steele Creek to be specific, up near the airport. It used to be country here, so I think folks are more used to this stuff. I love that there are no specific ordinances against livestock--I just have to be careful to avoid annoying anyone, as we do have a "nuisance animal" ordinance.

Anyway, just thought I'd pop in and say hello and welcome. I'd be glad to help you in any way I can. How was your honey harvest this year? Ours was good, but we had several swarms this spring (out of only two hives!!), so it wasn't as good a harvest as it could have been. PM me some time, and let's talk about livestock in Charlotte.

Welcome! I am a former Tarheel transplanted to Georgia. If you have bees, I hope chickens will be welcome, too. I've got chickens now, and we hope to have bees next spring. Got more flack from hubby on bees than chickens, so luckily our neighbors are going in with us on the bees.

Second... if the "inside the Beltline" part of Raleigh (can we say EXPENSIVE) not only allows chickens, but actually promotes them by organizing a tour of the coops each year, I don't see why Charlotte couldn't/wouldn't follow suit. Maybe they need to be educated about the "Hen-side the Beltline Tour d'Coop" in Raleigh.

Just bringing this thread back to life. My wife and I also live in Charlotte. While we dont have chickens yet, we have 8 on order that will arrive the last week in July! Would be interested in a get together with other Charlotte peeps...

Hi CJM Charlotte,

I live near the arboretum in S.E. Charlotte and I have four 2.5 week old Ameraucana chickens in a coop in my backyard. I had a local Matthews man build the coop for me. I got the baby chicks from Renfrow's Hardware store in Matthews. They have everything you need for raising chickens.

I do live in an HOA that might take issue with the chickens but I don't think my neighbors will even know I have them. I specifically researched a "quiet, docile, friendly" breed and found that in the Ameraucanas.

So far I am loving having the chickens and I encourage you to do the same. I would be happy to answer any questions you have and share resources I have found to be helpful.
