Hi Carolyn, welcome from over in the East Texas piney woods area!
We have springs underground which makes us swampy when it rains and we free range most of the day so sadly, no silkies for me. I do have several brahmas, but they tend to stay close to the porch (we eat on the porch occasionally), to people (so they can beg for treats), and the dog (she eats on the porch).
I've found that cream legbars, welsummers, and naked necks are all sweet and friendly and do well in a free range situation, as do naked necks. They are all tolerate of our hot weather too.
