Good grief, why are my hens not laying? I have 4 BO hens that I've had for almost a year and I think they were probably a year or less when I got them. I've mentioned before that they only give me one or two eggs a day. This week I've gotten one egg a day and NONE for the last 2 days. Could it be the heat or what?

Yes, of course it can be the heat. Hens are not machines. They are affected by all sorts of stressors, including the extreme heat and humidity we've had here in GA. Would you want to sit in a hot sweatbox to crank out an egg every day? Not me!

My Orps are not usually the best of all layers anyway, nothing like my Rocks are. I'd rather they took a short break than to die on the nest like many folks have seen happen in the last couple of weeks. Patience! Two days is nothing.

I've come to the conclusion that BO are just not good layers. Mine have never been consistent. I'm hoping my new little girls will do better! Dh wants to eat one of the BO! lol!

Tell him not to eat her-it's really not her fault.

My Orps lay very well the first year, but they never are 7 day a week layers. After they pass two years old, they average 4-5 eggs per week and when they pass 3 years, they are 3-4 eggs per week. I consider them good layers the first two years, then fair layers. My Rocks are excellent layers up until they're over 4 years old, and then they go down to just good layers, though I have a 4 year old who lays 6-7 eggs per week still and have two 5 1/2 year old Barred Rock hens still laying 3-4 eggs per week.

It's been 86f here for the last couple days, (warmer than the 65-75 it has been) and my one year old 7egg/week EE Betty hasn't laid in two days and is suddenly acting very lethargic. All my other birds are under 5 months and panting but quite spry. Her comb is still red and she will drink, but she is slightly fluffed up and just hanging out under the dense bushes, low appetite (even for tomatoes).
I thought maybe she had become a bit broody because she has been on the nest a lot since our Elenore started laying a week ago, so I put her in the nest box after ensuring it was cool and well vented but she left immediatly post haste. (Side note: Betty was walking around the pen outside the coop yelling like she was laying a crazy big egg for about 20 minutes after Elenore's first egg, kind of funny. Betty had already laid that day and has never made a fuss about laying large eggs anyway.)

Edit to add: Well still no egg, but after the temp dropped below 80f this evening she perked up quite a bit and started eating more. I didn't feel any egg lump in her belly either, so I think it's just the stress from the sudden rise in heat over the last few days.(not that 85 is super hot but we are acclimated to 60s and low 70s)
