i am still new to keeping chickens and have 4 10 month old chickens. They all started laying eggs about 6 months ago and egg production has been great. Recently my Blue Whiting has stopped laying. She doesn’t appear to be broody. She is still social with the other birds. Food has not changed. She doesn’t seem sick or unhappy. Is this just a phase? The only thing I can think that has changed is they were ranging in the yard and recently we have made a safer enclosed area. There s still lots of foraging to be had. And I prepare treats for them daily. I Am not sure what to do!

Check your feed and see what the protein is in it. I had a problem with that last year and a vet that owns our feed and grain store said to feed them 20% protein laying pellets. After that, they started laying and laid eggs all winter also. Maybe that will help yours also.

I'm no expert, but that does sound like a long time. I also have a small flock, 5 hens and one pullet. The hens are a little more than a year old. One of mine, a golden sex link, lays extra large deep brown eggs. She has only missed a total of 3 days of not laying. My other girls lay eggs that are lighter brown and very similar, though they are each a different breed, and they are not nearly as consistent as Lily (the sex link). I sometimes have a difficult time determining which of the other girls has not laid on any particular day when my egg count does not match my hen count:) I tell you all of this because I am wondering, even with a small flock, how you can determine that just that one hen has not laid instead of them trading off on whose not laying on any given day. If it is just that one, and she is still social, eating, and otherwise healthy, could she be hiding her eggs? I'm curious to hear what others on this site, with more experience, have to say.

I know it is the Blue Whitinging that isn’t laying because her eggs are true blue. Beautiful light blue. There is really no place for her to hide her eggs, I have looked everywhere just in case.

Ahhh. No wonder you've missed her eggs! Hope the suggested change in feed helps.

Welcome to BYC!

Is her comb still good and red?
An exam might be in order:

Supplemental feeding in alot of cases lowers their overall protein intake. For instance ground beef is only about 14% protein, now the salmon is 20% so you're good there.
I found this out when I thought feeding my birds eggs would boost their protein...and yea nope only 12% protein in eggs so I actually lowered my birds' protein levels. Just something to think about.
