no heat no light brooder

The best part is 2:15 as the kitten dives in. It stays and shows up occasionally. Cute!

I'm not sure what he's using in those sacks, but day-old chicks need heat, so there's something unless the temp there is in the low 90s.

100% on the no brooder light at night!!

They vaccinate for a few things, but don't vaccinate for Marek's which seems strange.

There absolute is no heat. They used to be called hatbox brooders, although recently I’ve heard them called fire less brooders also.

The box is insulated, so retains the body heat from the chicks. Obviously there is a minimum number of chicks where this is possible.

Is he in Africa or in the southern states where it's very warm? I can't tell by looking nor did I watch the video.
He’s on Africa I think, but this used to be done in England also where it is mild but not warm, year round.

Hm, a wool hen for warm weather. Nice.

The concept works in cold weather, too, if you add wool strips hanging down inside the box.
I don’t think you even need the strips, although when I trial it next season I will be using them. As I mentioned in another comment this is a historical method that used to be used in England, so definitely not just for warmer climates.

Please post about how it goes.

I'm planning to try it again, too.

Yes. It worked well but I didn't really give it a fair trial because I changed plans suddenly at the beginning. I built the box after I got the chicks. It wasn't as well built as I'd like and I had fewer chicks than I saw recommended for this method so I used some water bottles and such for a little added heat.

This is the thread I told about it. It has links to the threads by other people who wrote about doing this method. Several of those used the method very successfully without any heat source besides the chicks. If I remember correctly, a few had had some issues as they worked out how to do it. Thankfully, they told about that too.

If I can get dh to not object too much, I'll bring a few chicks home next week. I intend to use my upgraded wool hen to brood them outside.
