There absolute is no heat. They used to be called hatbox brooders, although recently I’ve heard them called fire less brooders also.The best part is 2:15 as the kitten dives in. It stays and shows up occasionally. Cute!
I'm not sure what he's using in those sacks, but day-old chicks need heat, so there's something unless the temp there is in the low 90s.

I don’t think you even need the strips, although when I trial it next season I will be using them. As I mentioned in another comment this is a historical method that used to be used in England, so definitely not just for warmer climates.Hm, a wool hen for warm weather. Nice.
The concept works in cold weather, too, if you add wool strips hanging down inside the box.
