I've included pictures of my 13 week old pullet. She is not growing, and has an increasingly difficult time walking. I'm new to chickens, and she has struggled for quite awhile now. I treated her and another pullet for coccidiosis, and they both improved immensely, though both seem to suffer now from crooked toes and Frances seems to be going lame...see pictures. Shortly after the Corid, I treated them both with electrolytes, Nutridrench, and vitamin B complex. The other girl struggles a bit with walking, but is growing and seems healthy. In contrast, Frances barely tries to walk anymore. I isolated her again tonight and would greatly appreciate any advice I can get for this poor little girl.

Hi there,

I'm so sorry to hear you've still got a sick bird on your hands! Can you tell me what area of the country you're in, what vaccinations she's had (if any), when this first started happening, what does her stool look like (pics are also helpful) and how much b2 is in the B complex you gave her? Did you use Amprolium (Corid) or Sulfa (Sulmet/Albon) for the Coccidiosis treatment? Why did you treat for Cocci, was there a stool sample that tested positive?

There may be the possibility of not treating with the right cocci treatment for the protazoa present. Most people treat with Corid (myself included) but Corid and Sulmet target different Cocci bugs.

Not walking or sitting on her hocks like in the pictures you included could be a vitamin deficiency, poor egg stock, or it could be something like Marek's Disease. 13 weeks is about the time Marek's started showing up in my first flock but I wouldn't go there just yet in your case. It sounds like you've given her a lot of nutrient boosts. Keeping her separated with food and clean water is the best bet right now. You might consider adding in some high quality probiotics, especially if you've just treated her for cocci. Time will tell what she's got going on.

I'm sending good thoughts for your little pullet!

I've never had to deal with Mareks, thankfully but did deal with ....

CTP (Curly Toe Paralysis), riboflavin deficiency. Get some PolyVisol w/out iron, 3 drops 3x day, place drops on the beak not down it's throat. Boiled egg yolk mixed with feed and/or any food high in riboflavin; plain yogurt, beef liver, can't remember the rest. I had 1 chick from a brood of 38 develop this when they were 3wks old, have been reading alot having the same problem.

Tape it's toes straight with the adhesive part of a band aid, you can also make a sling to support itself. Wyorp Rock answered another thread & drew up a picture, Eggcessive also replied to another thread with more food high in riboflavin. Search Curly Toe Paralysis to read up more....

Pics of my guy, seemed like forever but it took 2wks before he was walking...The last 2 pic are of him taunting the rest of the brood. He got spoiled.

Her stool looks good and she eats and drinks when I put it right in front of her. I treated her for cocci about 5 weeks ago, so it's been awhile, and the first Nutridrench, 3 weeks ago. I treated for cocci, because she and my other pullet had stool that looked abnormal, were lethargic, and shivering. I administered 1 mL of Nutridrench to her last night orally instead of in the water. I'm going to try a scrambled egg this morning mixed with Greek yogurt. It seems as if her crop didn't completely empty last night, and it's pretty small, but hard. Could she be suffering with an impacted crop as well? I'm sorry to be such a dummy; I'm trying to learn all I can, but I am new at this and she has been a challenge.

I'm sorry; I live in rural Idaho, I bought my chickens from a large farm store, and have no idea whatsoever if they received vaccinations. I checked her stool again this morning, and as I stated earlier, it is totally normal. She just can't stand straight up or balance....feel so bad for her!

Vitamins containing riboflavin (vitamin B2) would be very important to give. Human B complex tablets crushed into food daily would be very economical. A small amount of chopped beef liver, hamburger, salmon, tuna, sesame seeds, certain nuts, mushrooms, plain yogurt, and spinach are all good for riboflavin. Curled toe paralysis or riboflavin deficiency, can cause lameness, and the earlier it is treated, the better the chances for recovery. Unfortunately Mareks disease can cause similar symptoms and reduced immunity to many common diseases, such as cocci.

Eggcessive - Little off the subject but have seems to be ALOT more Riboflavin Deficiency popping up? Makes me wonder if there's been a change in the feed make up.
