I just got chicks a few weeks ago.....everyone was so disappointed we wouldn't have eggs for easter and my mom really wanted some little eggs. Long story short, I found a couple bantams today that are already laying. One is some kind of EE cause the egg is green and the other is a real pretty black with a green sheen.

They were in with a rooster. Are they eggs likely to be fertile? for how long? could I try saving a few and hatching them? Do I have to have an incubator?

Any help is appreciated.

After a hen is bred, her eggs can be fertile for 2-3 weeks. If you store them in temps below 60 degrees but not freezing or in refridgerators, they can last a week or two, some people have even tried for 3 weeks but a week or less is best.

If you don't have an incubator, you can try hatching them under a broody hen (one who tries to hatch her own eggs) or make or buy an incubator. The cheap ones, like Little Giants, are only about $50. They're touchy though, just to let you know. Also, some people are willing to allow others to hatch their eggs in their incubator, often for a small price.

Also, if you really want to know if your eggs are fertile, crack some open. Look at the yolk. If there is a white bullseye looking spot in the yolk, it is fertile.
