No longer laying, but don't want to eat them...

Mine are pets first and foremost so I've never really thought of what do I do when the fanny magic ends.I don't have kids or a dog so got no qualms about keeping them. Besides I don't want anyone putting me on craigslist when I hit menopause, wouldn't feel right doing it to them either. Odd views im well aware.

"Fanny magic" :lau

Some of mine stay forever, and some move on, at one, two, or sometimes three years of age. It depends, and they leave with full disclosure, although I don't trap nest, so am never sure who's laying how many eggs/ week. Some cockerels find new flocks, and some find the freezer, and a very few stay here for a very long time. Have a plan, and don't expect 'somebody else' to adopt birds because you are tired of them, or they are three years old, or whatever. Also, many hens develop health issues and are dying at three years of age, and some even younger. Predators happen too. Give them a good life, and do what's best for the birds you've taken on and are responsible for, for their lives. Mary

I've had chickens for three years now. Just this year I decided to rehome three of them and got three new chiicks. I gave away three to some people at work. Their kids are thrilled. I have a total of 12, self-imposed limit. I will keep my original two, they will be here their entire lives. But I admit that some of the others I could give away without feeling too bad. And actually around here anyway you can find people who will take your chickens just because they like chickens. They don't plan to eat them either.
But in a more urban area that would be more difficult.
I have been lucky and always gotten females, but if I ended up with a Mail I would give it to a friend of mine. She eats her roosters. Unfortunately that's what I would have to do though.
