It's not an otter. Trust me.

My bet is on a coyote. They are very smart and will lie in wait watching for the exact moment. You would have caught a coon or a possum in a trap that large. Do you have bobcats in the region? That's a possibility, but highly unlikely.

Borrow one of those game cameras that the hunters use if you can.

We have an otter that visits our place every now and then and yes young males this time of year will travel long distances away from main water sources looking for love. They wont stay around long but are very mischievous the time they do spend in one spot. They are mostly nocturnel but can be seen through the day. Otters are very long and it takes a very long box trap to catch one. The best way to be sure what youre after is wet an area down so you'll have fresh tracks the next morning, that way you know what trapping method to use. Good Luck!!

The Recipe

Go to the feed store and get some Golden Malrin. It`s a fly bait used in stables. It is in the equine section and comes in 1 lb and 5 lb cans. Put 1/2 cup of Golden Malrin on a pie tin or styrofoam plate. On top of it place 1 tablespoon of anykind of berry preserves. Very humane. Kills within 10 ft. Put it out in several locations at night and pick up the predators in the morning. Caution, cats will not eat it as they don`t like the chemical smell. Dogs will eat it so put the dog up when The Recipe is out. Don`t get it on your hands. Works on coyotes, fox, coons, possum, etc.

Good hunting !!........Pop

It's a fox! I came out to the chikens squaking on Sunday and saw it running across the road. Put traps out in the area near what I think is its den. Nothing last night. Might be time for lollipop's recipe.

had a fox take out my whole flock last spring. Broke my heart. I waited a few months as I was double securing the coop and run and got new chickens with a BIG OL Rooster. Have not had a problem since but BF decided rooster had to go but so far so good. I hope I havent jinxed myself by writing this. So sorry for your loss
