I'm sure this question has been asked and answered several times over, but I can't seem to find the threads. This morning I discovered a reddish poop in the brooder, and then another later in the morning. This is my first flock, and I did some research and concluded that it was probably shed intestinal lining. However, by 3pm, I noticed several more bloody piles, and the red color was gradually getting darker. I have three 12 day old chicks, and three 4 week old chicks. I noticed 2 of the littler ones were holding their wings slightly out from their body, and looked like they were trying to poop, but not having much luck. One of the four week old chicks wasn't holding his tail up anymore :( I'm pretty sure it's Cocci. I had them outside in a small penned area for 1/2 an hour just a few days ago, and we had just finished with 2 days of rain ( I didn't know at the time you could get the bacteria for damp soil ) so I think that's where they contracted it. Now I've witnessed all three of the older chicks poop dark red, and all three of the little ones are still fluffed out oddly. I bleached out the brooder and disinfected their dishes.

The problem is, I have no way to get Corid for them until monday, everywhere is closed on sundays. I'm really REALLY worried about them :( I'm pretty sure there's nothing I can give them to combat the bacteria, but is there anything I can give them to make them at least feel a little better?

Give them buttermilk to slow the cocci effects until you can get some corid. Bleach has no effect on cocci when cleaning, use ammonia.

Thankfully there was a Tractor Supply store about 30 miles from me, and they were open today. I was able to get the Corid powder. Unfortunately, one of the younger chicks ( he was the smallest one ) died during the night :( The other 5 are hanging in there though. One of the older chicks was looking really ill, and I was able to syringe some of the medicated water into her beak. I'm really hoping it's not too late because I'm especially attached to this one. Positive thoughts and prayers are needed!

Keep hand feeding the medicine to that sickest one, every couple hours even, until you see it start improving and drinking on it's own. I had one in my last batch that I had to do that with. Unless they are too far gone they usually perk up pretty fast once they start getting the Corid.

So far, the bigger chick is not showing any improvement. She's been given 1ml of water with a syringe this afternoon when I got the medicine, and then again 2 hours later, and just now ( which has been about 3 hours ). She's still very lethargic. Now another one of the small ones is having a difficult time. He was laying down on his side with his feet sticking out, and I was pretty sure that was it for him. However, he got himself up to poop, which was about 90% blood, and I picked him up and was able to get him drink 1/2 an ml, though he didn't open his eyes the whole time. I hope they pull through, but at this point I'm not so sure....Hanging in there though, and tonight I will keep the brooder in my bedroom so I can wake up and have them drink some more in the middle of the night.
