No nestboxes, will chickens lay eggs?

Will having no nestboxes impact egg production rate?

I have a few that prefer to lay on the ground. It will be harder to box train them once they are comforable on the ground.

They tend to lay where others have. Training eggs in their nest is the best way to teach them.

Does it matter the color? I have RIR which will lay brown eggs.
Also does it matter how many? How about just one fake to train them?

Color doesn't matter. Most people use either golf balls or plastic easter eggs. It helps to put something in the plastic eggs or they fly out of the boxes really easily.
