An encouraging report from CDFA says that there have been no recently detected cases of virulent Newcastle Disease for the last month.

California state veterinarian Dr. Annette Jones reported July 2 that with the cooperation of southern California residents "in very difficult circumstances and a tremendous commitment from emergency response teams," the joint California Department of Food & Agriculture/U.S. Department of Agriculture Virulent Newcastle Disease Project has found no new positive detections of the disease since June 4, 2019.

They warn that the virus could still be active for several more months. Monitoring teams will continue to survey areas of past infection for signs of any new outbreak. And the existing protocols will be pursued if any additional cases are detected.

But could we hope this could be the beginning of the end? ::waiting breathlessly::

Here's another report of the recent CDFA announcement.

The additional info from this one is that the next evaluation that comes from CDFA will be in October. Fingers crossed that it will be equally robust!

And, interestingly, 1.2 million birds were eradicated from 448 premises including 4 commercial operations. That means 100K or 8% of the suspected birds that they refer to as backyard and exhibition birds that came from 444 of the non-commercial premises took up a tremendous amount of the efforts expended to stop the virus.

It also means that these "non-commercial" facilities housed an average of 225 birds each. I am trying to wrap my brain around non-commercial facilities with 200+ chickens assuming that most of us, who consider ourselves backyard chicken people, probably have 50 and less. Probably many under 25. I don't know what this means, I just am gob smacked by the image of this.

I'm with you on that. Even though I'm an organizer of a huge backyard chicken meetup group of members with 2, 3 or 4 birds, it still surprises me, I've never had 200 chickens. Usually 100 or less. I have cared for a few hundred Macaws but that is a different story.

At this time, as far as I’ve heard they’re investigating if it’s an isolated case or if they’re going to quarantine. This is fairly recent - it was confirmed Friday iirc - so they’ve been working the long weekend handing out euthanasia orders and testing.

REMINDER ALL. DONT MOVE YOUR BIRDS AROUND IF YOU’RE ANYWHERE NEAR THIS. DONT HIDE YOUR BIRDS.

I think we're f---de-doodle-dooed. I'll never be able to get a chick that's true to it's breed again!!!

But at least I was able to get my initial 3 and luckier than I ever realized that one of my next batch of "hens" was a tiny roo. So at least I can get an annual clutch of barnyard mixes.

I'd like to ring the necks of those SOB folks who've prolonged this from the start. :he
