In the Brooder
Hello from Scranton, KS!!
Don't know where that is? It's ok. Neither did I until we bought a property here to establish our homestead. Year 1 was the garden, but this year has been all about the chickens. We obsessively researched which breeds so long that we ended up on the wait list with our preferred hatchery. 4 months for our little mailbox babies to arrive!!! The empty coop stared at me long enough that I broke down and got a few chicks from the local Tractor Supply. "It's a test run", I told my husband. We should have known better. Now we've got some 12 week old pullets and some 2 week old chicks.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My family raised chickens when I was a kid, but these are my first as a grown up. Also my first time with chickens in a place that actually experiences all 4 seasons.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 21
(3) What breeds do you have? Light Brahmas, Buff Brahmas, Golden Comets, Rhode Island Reds, New Hampshire, Delaware, Buck Eyes, Barnevelder, Easter Eggers, Black Austrolorp
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? An ethical and sustainable source of protein for my family that also provides entertainment.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Crochet, Gardening, Baking
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. Married, Pre-school aged children, work from home in the tech industry, 4 house dogs and 1 goodest girl who works the property, still learning about this whole homesteading thing, but loving the journey.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? Referred by someone at my local swap. Just finding my way around, but am seeing lots of good info.
Glamour shots attached.
