no roost for chickens

I have a silkie cross and she has NEVER slept on a roost, and one has always been available to her.

Most silkies will not roost for some reason or another. But it is good to have a roost available for other chickens. It keeps the poo in one area and MUCH easier to keep the hen house clean too.

I'm putting a roost in today, and it will be about 5ft up. Do I have to put a ramp for them to get up to it? They are about 4 months old and have not had a roost yet....i'm new to chickens roll Will I have to pick them up and put them up to show them? Thanks, Pam

I had mine in the coop at 7 weeks and they ALL had NO problems jumping up on a roost that was 3 - 4 foot high. Except the cochins. They had to be helped a bit. Now that they are 15 weeks they can all jump up on them. You may possibly have to show them where it is but after that I think they will get it.

I was wondering if its a good idea to have a ramp up to the roost also. I had a 2x4 placed up very high across the walls to hold my feeder, I never expected the chickens to jump up there but one by one they all did. Now Im repositioning 2x4s across the back of the coup at different levels. Would a ramp be helpful? When they come down from the high perch I cringe sometimes at how they are landing.
