I have 3 chickens that are 2 years old, we raised them from chicks. My two sex links/red stars are having a hard time becoming "regular" layers again after molting and about a week ago one of them started laying eggs without shells or membranes, just the yolks and whites. We feed them layer feed and give them calcium and they roam free in the back yard. I didn't worry to much when I found the first egg like that but I've found 4 of them now - something must be wrong - anyone know what it could be? Thanks.

I had a chicken that laid non-shelled eggs. Really threw me for a loop until I found her chowing down on the duck's mash. Something about duck feed that sucked all the calcium out of her abilities. Penned off the duck (and food) and eggs were back to normal.

I don't know if you have ducks or it that helps, but that's what I can offer. Do a search with the Custom Search bar and you'll undoubtedly find similar situations of shell-less eggs.

Moulting can play havoc with hens, btw. Do they get any sort of vitamins?

Anybody else want to weigh in?

I noticed yesterday that this same chicken that is laying shell-less and membrane-less eggs is also growing spurs...do these two things have anything to do with each other?

What ever became of your hen who grew spurs and laid eggs without shells? I have two hen growing spurs. The one has full spurs and lays shelless eggs. Now the one starting to grow spurs is have egg that are thin shell. Any information or experience of others on this issue would be wonderful.
