I have a 2.5 year old Barred Rock hen who appears to be very happy & healthy. A few weeks ago she started laying shell-less eggs. In several days time she laid 2 of them, then stopped laying anything for several days. Then she laid another and it was shell less again. Yesterday she laid another shell less egg, and it didnt even have the membrane around it. It was like you cracked one open in the fry pan, only it was in the nest when she got off and walked away. My chickens all have oyster shell available at all times. They get an 18% layer feed at all times, plus they get lots of healthy treats such as blueberries, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, raisins, spinach, other greens and kitchen scraps sometimes too. Almost daily I give them a few handfuls of Black Soldier Fly Larvae. I cant imagine them not having enough calcium and protein. When this started happening, I also gave her 1-3 CC's of Poultry Cell every day for 3 days , then I gave her calcium plus D3 & K2 for the next few days. None of this has helped. I really wished I could get to the bottom of it. I want her to have what she needs.

The extra things besides a balanced layer feed may be diluting her calcium and vitamin D levels. But she also may be experiencing a reproductive disorder salpingitis (inflammation of the oviduct.) Her shell gland in the oviduct may not be working well. I would stop the extras and give her a human calcium citrate tablet with D 3 300 to 600 mg daily for the next 7 days. Is she close to molting or has she recently completed a molt?

It is true I may have been giving too many treats, but I thought the BSFL was supposed to be so full of calcium and protein that it should all be good. Some of my birds are Molting , but this particular does not appear to be Molting at this time. What can I do for her if it is Salpingitis? I will do the calcium pills again. Thanks for thr quick reply, I just have to help this bird, I love her.
