Noise before laying?

My chickens are about 18 weeks and 3 days. Just about to start laying! We have a Speckled Sussex, New Hampshire Red, Araucana, and Black Star. They have been making much more noise lately than usual. Is this because they are about to lay? Is there any other explanation why they might be especially noisy? They are well-fed, watered, have enough space..
Thanks for your help!

I caught one of mine standing at the fence of the run bawking her little empty head off. I watched her for about five minutes before I went in to see what was going on from her perspective. I was afraid she might be screaming at a snake or something. Turns out it was sympathy bawking for my hen who was laying.

When mine lay, they squawk. Sounds awful. My brilliant husband (who I love, but also love to pick on) listened to it with me one day and said, "Gee! They act like it hurts!" Yeah. Enough said.

Mine talk when they lay. As for that being a sign of readiness, I dunno.

mine did after they laid...calling to the flock. the 'chirp' and sing when on the nest sometimes. like purring.

my sussex did get in and out of the nesting box to gather the biggest wood chips off the floor, put them on her back and carry them to the nest! that was her cue. hilarious.

best blessings for tons of yummy eggs!
