I have two Barred Rock and two Black Austrolorps I got in mid-April, so roughly 17 weeks ago. They are a nice group of girls, and have made very little noise over the past 4.5 months. Until the last week or so. It's not all the time, but in bursts they seem (at least one, who I haven't been able to identify) to be really exercising vocal cords!
I was expecting some noise for early egg laying. But am really not expecting that for another 6 weeks, at least.
I live in town and have lots of neighbors, who I don't want to disturb. Any advice? Is it a phase that will pass?

Might pass, they may be coming into lay soon at 4.5 months old and are more vocal at that point...
....BUT....
Yes, chickens(both males and females) make noises, sometimes very loud noises.

It's part of the 'Romance meets Reality' of chicken keeping.

It may come and go, some birds are more vocal than others, but they all can make quite the ruckus.

Thanks aart! I don't mind some noise, and was expecting some, of course. I have a 2.5 year old daughter, so I have come to expect nary a moment of peace!! ahaha
This morning I went running outside thinking there was a predator afoot or something because one of the girls was making SUCH a ruckus. Nope, they were all fine, hanging in their usual relaxation corner.
You're right, the romance meets reality phase (although I have to say I have been pleasantly surprised how little work they require!!)... Reading a million descriptions about various breeds before choosing makes them seem like they should never make a peep/love to hang out in my lap/and follow orders.
I'll just hope my neighbors don't mind, and make sure they get fresh eggs when they start coming!
