Noisy Hens, - their last chance....

I only have two chickens and for the most part they are fairly quiet and they have the run of the garden all day which helps. One lays every day at 7.00am and we never hear from her before or after. The other lays every 3 days and she takes a good few hours to get the egg out. While she is sitting on the nest the other chook runs around squawking like you wouldn't believe.

She is constantly calling for her friend to come join in her chicken adventures and it is loud!!! Big surprise to me too. We live in such an built-up area I am always worrying about the noise and neighbours. The only thing I can do to shut her up is to lock them up together until the egg drama is over. She'll squawk a bit but nowhere near as bad as when she's out in the garden on her own. I'm positive that if we had 3 hens it wouldn't be so bad 'cos she'd have company all the time.

Small World Cara, - Stokenchurch is about 5 miles from me, and is where I spent my childhood for 12 years, we moved to Springfield Road, - from 1965 - 77

I went to school in the village - but both my older sisters went to Wycombe High School.

Maybe our paths crossed in a school playground many years ago...

We are having the same sort of problems with our chickens ... very noisey in the mornings ... so much so that i've started to wake up really early to let them out as the neighbours won't be impressed being woken up at 6 ! are there any suggestions and are they noiser because they have started laying ?

As far as I know the oils help lubricate, so it's easier for the hen to pass the egg.

My silver laced wyandotte is SO noisy!

I have been introducing my new pullets to the coop along side the hens coop and oh does she put up a fuss... ALL DAY LONG lol. I am wondering when she is going to get used to them??

I hope I don't get any complaints.

I do find that if I have lots of distraction, like throwing in new hay or some treats it quiets things down for a bit.

Best of luck to you!

Do you have a rooster? Just wondering. I have several. My friend however did not and her hens were right down obnoxious!! And mean too!! I gave her one of mine and he keeps them in line! Now she has to put up with the crowing! I find that it is easier to listen to the crowing then the non stop hen bickering!!!

I have a mix and my loudest layers are the Jersey Giants. It's funny because just yesterday afternoon, I was shushing them up because one of them was screaming at 3 in the afternoon and I try to keep my hens quite for the neighbors sake. (However, she decided not to lay one that time but just practicing)

Francois my Silkie roo seems to keep my girls in check, even the big ones. I wouldn't give up on them just yet.
