We're getting ready to plunge into the world of chickens, hens only. Do they make a lot of noises? Silly question, I know, but I'd love to hear the answer! Thanks.

Mine can get pretty noisy when they lay, it is kinda cute. That is not at 4 in the morning like my roo. The only other time they have gotten really loud was when a bobcat was coming into the yard. The whole flock was screaming.

And I don't blame them.

Not sure if it's typical for the breed or just personality, but my Barred Rock hen is constantly chatty. She really never shuts up.

My others are quiet most of the time. My Jersey Giants are the quietest of my hens, never really say anything.

My Rooster just started to crow and really enjoys it, so he is doing that a lot!

Hens can be LOUD when they lay! I have 7 standard size layers and one bantam and when they lay an egg it is loudly announced! And not just by the one who laid the egg, a few friends will come and help her make it known! My rooster even sings the egg song with them so my little barn is a very noisy place in the mornings!

The rest of the day they are pretty quiet, just making their pleasant, happy hen noises as they peck and scratch around the barn. Very enjoyable!

Edited to add: KristyAz, that's funny you mentioned that about your barred rock, my two are exactly the same way! They are much chattier then the other girls, they are always deep in conversation!

My girls can get chatty. They are mostly quiet but when we come out to the backyard they get a bit loud. They are either used to us giving them treats or letting them out for a walk. The girls who lay can be a bit loud when laying. My mom calls it "bragging." She used to have chickens about 30 years ago. It's pretty muffled in the coop's laying boxes. When they are loud though, I try to see if it would be annoying. I sit in the kitchen and see if I can hear them. Generally, I can't so I don't believe they are too loud for the neighbors. They are definitely more quiet than all of the neighbors dogs, especially at night. No noises from the hens at night and I have no roosters

but the neighborhood dogs do make noise. Luckily for us, the neighbors behind us also have some chickens so there doesn't seem to be anyone to annoy directly next to us.

The egg song is loud just because usually more then one hen is talking at a time. Then there are the fights over the nest box I have one bantam EE that does the coop/run news twice a day she gets up on the perch in the pen and starts talking she does this in the morning and in the afternoon its funny she is my smallest hen but has the biggest mouth.

I don't find them as annoying as the small dogs that bark at everything all day. I know some people say they keep their chickens under the radar either the neighbors aren't home when the hens lay or the neighbors know and aren't saying anything. There are times my hens are louder then my rooster crowing.
