Can hens be trained to be quiet? I am thinking along the lines of something unpleasant, but harmless, occurring whenever they get loud. Training collar for hens? lol. Mine are soooo noisy in the morning, I am afraid I am going to be discovered.

As far as I know, not at all. Every time I tell mine to be quiet they get louder and LOUDER!!

I have found though that when my dogs bark at them they quit.

I am worried about the same thing! I have 2 red sex links and a "stray" black bantam who decided to move in the yard--and the black bantam is really loud! I am afraid she is going to get us busted! The red sex-links are quiet for now (but they havent started laying yet). I live in downtown Orlando and it is totally illegal to have chickens! Most of my neighbors are in on the secret but all it takes is one jerk and bye bye chickens. I think the only solution is a very well insulated coop.

Im in the same situation as you, I live in a very uptight neighborhood. people arnt even allowed to have over 2 dogs here. (something like that) And my luck, we live right by someone that would turn me in. THANK GOD, we live by another neighbor who has a dog that never stops barking/whining, 3 kids that are much louder then my hens, and the fact that my coop is right by their fence. LOL. they dont mind either so, knock on wood, for now we are doing good.

what are you going to do when you get the 12 new chicks!? Are chickens illegal where you are?

Oh, isn't that the truth?! I don't think you can quiet those girls, and sometimes, they get to "singing" all at once, for no apparent reason!

If it weren't for someone complaining, I couldn't care less, I think its so cute, but you know how people can be.

I havent changed my sig. since then. My old girls were going to be given or sold away and I was gonna get those new pullets from a friend. He has so many types of chickens, and had layers for me. Well next thing I knew it, he had sold them to someone who was gonna resale them... so I guess Ill have to keep the old girls for awhile. They are starting to pick up in production though.
And yes I am illegal! lol

Same here, I have 3 RIR and one is really loud. Two of them are laying but only one is loud. I'm predicting the one not laying yet will be just as loud when she does start laying. I already talked to my neighbors to let me know if the noise bother them but I didn't think they would be this loud and waking me up. I would have to give up the loud ones but then that would only leave me with one quiet chicken. I don't know what to do at this point, the loud one is in the garage. I can't keep her in there forever so I'm hoping she quiets down soon.

Is the black bantam a Black Rosecomb???
They are very noisy and it probably didn't move in......
it was probably moved OUT by it's old owners. LOL

I have a 4 week old Rosecomb that is so noisy it is driving me crazy. I love her personality but the noise is loud and never ending.
I'm thinking about throwing her outside with the big girls. LOL. Not really but for some reason, I think she might actually be able to make it. Unless they kill her just to shut her up.
