Non Aggressive Breeds

It's fun to have a variety though, especially when starting out. You will like some and not others (already happened!) and develop interests. Mary
Yes unfortunately I was given bad advice and got all RIR at first. I added to my flock with the others, including an Austrolorp, who died. But the RIR have been terribly mean to the others. I rehomed them except for this last one and it's still not working out.

Favacaunas are nice they are a mix of faverolles and ameraucana so you get the eggs and a nice chicken with just enough gumption to stand up for itself. This would be a good option if you want the chickens to be hands on for your kids.

Oh, okay which ones are docile?
I have never had EEs, but I have three Ameraucanas and I love them. They are pretty and lay beautiful eggs. No matter which breed you choose, make sure to handle them a lot so that they become used to humans holding them. Children love chicks, so this shouldn't be a problem. I'm sure your kids will want to hold them all the time, just make sure to supervise, chicks are very delicate.

Yes, thank you! We've had chicks before. My kids are older too and familiar with them.

I have had not so nice birds in several breeds that others listed as nice.

I like the buffs temperament very much. I have also never had a bad Cochin or Black Australorp.

My Delawares were very sweet birds as were the California Whites.

So many breeds so few coops.......

I have Buffs, a Delaware, Ameraucanas, an EE, and a Wyandotte. They are all pretty mellow except the Wyandotte can be a stinker sometimes. But usually that's more towards me. She is not what I would call aggressive; just has an attitude and likes to make growling noises. She used to peck me but she has really mellowed after she started laying.

You'll have a much easier time finding EEs and they will cost you less. Plus not knowing what egg color you will end up getting is fun. I'm still waiting for my first EE egg. My first one has never laid an egg even though she is over a year old and the ones I hatched turned out to be boys. :( Got some in the brooder and more in the incubator so I'll eventually get an EE egg. :fl

I loved my Austrolorp. Her name was Alice. Unfortunately she got sour crop. I had to have her put to sleep. She was the sweetest girl.
