Hi! We are new to the Turkey thing. We just got some babies from the feed store but the sign said they were white meat turkeys and under that it said non breedable. Why would they be non breedable? TIA

Read up about broad breasted turkeys. They were developed to provide a quick growing heavy meat bird. As such they are commercially reproduced through artificial insemination.

It is possible for them to breed but it is very hard on both of them due to the weight. My first time raising BBB was two years ago, I bought them in April from the feed store. Around October, one of my BBB toms (was close to 40 lbs) mated one time with one of the hens (27 lbs) he almost killed her when he climbed on top of her. The matting was not on purpose, it just happened one time. She laid a few fertile eggs around December, I tried to hatch in the incubator. We hatch eggs and then put the babies under the broody hen so I though I could do the same with BBB. The BBB hen went broody and when one of the babies hatched, I put it under the hen that night. the next morning I went to check on it and found it squashed like a pancake. Her breast were so fat that she killed it. One lesson learned the hard way.
