Non-GMO food

This is from the USDA website concerning Organics. I'm not trying to prove anyone wrong, I just thought someone might want to see this.

"The use of genetic engineering, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs), is prohibited in organic products. This means an organic farmer can’t plant GMO seeds, an organic cow can’t eat GMO alfalfa or corn, and an organic soup producer can’t use any GMO ingredients. To meet the USDA organic regulations, farmers and processors must show they aren’t using GMOs and that they are protecting their products from contact with prohibited substances, such as GMOs, from farm to table."

It wouldn't surprise me if there was GMO contamination in all grains, even organic. The certifier probably has a set tolerance for GMO contamination when they test for it in Organic grain.

Thanks, I swore I read something different years back. I'm happy to be proven wrong in this instance. We buy 80% of our foods organic so I'm happy about the GMOs not being included.

For reference, here's the label for Purina Homegrown Layer. Couldn't find organic or Non-GMO anywhere on the bag.

It appears to be regional difference. I will snap a photo of the bag and the big sign in front of it the next time I am in the feed store. It clearly stated it was non-GMO and soy-free. I see from this label, that this bag is not soy-free. So that local variation would not be non-gmo because of the soy in its content.

Yes, that bag runs $16.29, while the organic/non-gmo is $31.99. I'd be interested to see the differences. We have the Organic Pride, Scratch N' Peck, Renew Poultry and Modesto Milling available.

Would it be worth your while to combine a trip to pick up chicken feed at Modesto Milling & a shopping trip? That's what we do! I think a bag of layer feed is about $24 at the mill but don't quote me on that.

To be honest, my flock is on Flock Raiser right now. I may switch them to Renew Poultry when they start laying but I'm undecided right now. I'm near Sacramento, so Modesto Milling would be a drive for me. I have several options if I decide to go the organic/non-GMO route

I use azurestandard for my organic feed. I like Rogue Organic layer pellets and chick starter. There is a large ($550 minimum) order though. They drive a semi truck and you meet them and load your car.

I only have 9 chickens and 4 ducks, a $550 min order would be a bit unmanageable for me. Thanks for the suggestion though!

The $550 minimum order is per drop site. If there is already a drop site set up near you, I think it is a $50 minimum per order. You might want to check their website to see if there is one. I am part of a co-op and we all pool our orders together. If you don't already have a drop site in your area, perhaps you could see if there are others in your area looking for organic feed and other items and start your own co-op. Azure Standard carries many items that people interested in organic would be interested in.
