Noobie here

Anyone have any good tips they think is worth sharing for caring for chickens?

I'm interested in the "organic" approach. Not looking to start a debate, just some friendly personal experiences would help.
Tip #1--Make sure that your coop/run is predator proof. Use hardware cloth rather than chicken wire as too many predators can tear through chicken wire, or squeeze through the openings in the mesh. If you have racoons in your area, be sure and use either a padlock or at least a double action latch on your coop door as racoons can easily figure out how to open a single action latch. If you haven't done so already, I would highly recommend checking out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is lots of useful information there.

Hi Michael, thanks so much! I have checked out that area of the site. I'm planning on making my coop like fort Knox! We do have quite a few predators in the area - we are very rural. Thank you for the double latch idea though, I wouldn't have ever thought of that one.

Can anyone recommend a good feed for the chickens? Ingredients/nutritional info I should be aware of?

You're welcome. There's a good article on Feeding Chickens at Different Ages at http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2012/11/feeding-chickens-at-different-ages.html that will answer a lot of questions you may have about feeding your chickens. Be sure and keep the treats to less than 10% of your chickens' diet as too many treats will make them fat and unhealthy. Commercial feeds are specially formulated to meet all a chicken's nutritional needs.

Oh wow! That site gave me a good idea as what and how I'd like to feed my chickens.
